The Poseidon Adventure - Lindas Death And Scotts Sacrifice

DisasterOnline

When almost at the end of their journey to the engine room, the ship is rocked by explosions once again, this time causing lieutenant Mike Rogos wife, Linda, to fall into the fire. Angered by this, Scott decides to sacrifice himself by opening the way for them.

(Sermon prep). In "The Poseidon Adventure," Gene Hackman plays the Rev. Dr. Frank Scott, a mainline minister of some sort (graduate of Union Theological Seminary; I'm skimming the novel to see if the author mentions the denomination). For *decades* I have disliked the Rev. Dr. Scott because, I think, as a young Southern Baptist peep, I thought he would have people rely on themselves more, if not to the exclusion of, "God." My own theology nowadays is more complex -- and so is my ... humanology, as well as my notions of humanity and divinity and what it means to be "in Christ" and what it means to encounter God's love in Christ and then try to live it out in love for God and others. In this scene, a commenter on Wikiquote describes what Scott does here as "denouncing God" and then committing "suicide." No. He desperately and honestly prays to God, and then sacrifices himself. Big difference. A profound scene from "The Poseidon Adventure":

Ernest Borgnine (RIP) probably had more "important" roles but I'll always love this dramatic speech after his character Rogo's wife Linda drowns in the Poseidon Adventure.

Ernest Borgnine dead at 95. Underrated performance from perhaps my all-time movie. http://t.co/pbJbT4fD
